Wisdom of the I Ching – why Falmouth?

QUERY

I asked the I Ching what was so special to me about Falmouth – why was I so drawn to it the first time I was there – why do I want it to be so prominent in my future.

STORY

There was once a wanderer who had traveled far and wide, searching for a place that felt like home. They had seen many lands, each offering something beautiful and unique, yet none had filled the quiet longing they held within—a longing to be rooted, to be in harmony with the land itself. This search led them to a small, unassuming town by the sea, a place named Falmouth.

One evening, as the sun dipped low and shadows stretched across the earth, the wanderer met a sage who spoke of the teachings of Hexagram 23, Stripping Away. The sage noticed the wanderer’s weariness and asked, “Why do you carry such weight within your heart?”

The wanderer confessed, “I’ve come to Falmouth because I feel it calls to me in a way no other place has. But I do not understand why.”

The sage nodded knowingly and began to explain. “Hexagram 23 speaks to a time of letting go, of releasing what no longer serves, of removing the outer layers to reveal something true and pure beneath.” The wanderer listened intently, sensing that the sage’s words held a key to understanding the pull toward this place.

The sage continued, “Sometimes, we must strip away the trappings of what we think we want—our expectations, our past experiences, and the patterns we have carried with us. Falmouth calls you to let go, to shed these old layers. This land offers a quiet, steadying energy that allows you to return to something essential within yourself, unburdened by the clutter of your journey thus far.”

Changing line 6 spoke of an inevitable release, a final surrender to the call of something deeper. “This line,” the sage explained, “suggests that you are ready to embrace the foundation of who you are, without adornment or expectation. Falmouth is important to you because it is a place where you can lay down the burdens of your past, a place where the old versions of yourself can gently fall away, making space for something truer to emerge.”

With this shift, the wanderer’s heart softened, feeling the weight of many years begin to ease. They understood that this journey to Falmouth was not about finding a place to escape to but about finding a place where they could return to themselves.

As the conversation deepened, the sage introduced the wisdom of Hexagram 2, Earth. “Earth,” they said, “is pure receptivity, the quiet and stable force that supports and nurtures all life. It is a force that grounds and nourishes, asking nothing in return. Falmouth embodies this energy for you—a place of open arms, where the land itself is ready to hold and nurture you as you truly are, without pretense.”

The sage’s words felt like a gentle embrace, echoing the deep longing within the wanderer’s soul. “In Falmouth, you may find the stillness and acceptance that you have yearned for—a place that welcomes you as Earth does, without needing you to be anything other than yourself. It invites you to plant roots, to let go of past identities and be embraced by a place that simply is, reflecting back to you the beauty of just being.”

The wanderer felt a profound peace, sensing for the first time why Falmouth had called to them so strongly. It was not about starting over or achieving something new; it was about arriving at a place where they could finally feel whole. Here, they could reconnect with the land, feel the steadiness of Earth beneath their feet, and let go of everything that no longer belonged in their heart.

In the quiet of that evening, they knew Falmouth was more than a destination—it was a homecoming, a place that offered the grounding and acceptance they had searched for all along.
