Happy Birthday Cancer

For those born under the sign of Cancer, find inspiration in the ancient Greek god, Poseidon.

Do not go gentle into that good night…’Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Dylan Thomas

Poseidon lives in the sea of dreams and metaphor, that which lays below the surface, in our unconscious. Here are the emotions and memories that are retrievable yet may be too intense, too turbulent to process, at least all at once.

The good news is that the animal symbolically linked to Poseidon is the horse, which brings with it the power of the beauty of our physical instincts, freedom of movement, inner strength. This suggests that when we value feelings, we can make real progress. But if, as society so often encourages us, we try to repress our true emotions, we ought not to be surprised when, like Poseidon, they rise up like a depth charge and engulf us, perhaps sucking us like unlucky sailors, to our deaths in the murky depths.

During times when the energy of Poseidon is strong, we do ourselves a favour by getting our conscious and unconscious in active communication, paying special attention to our more positive emotions because they do more than simply make us feel good, they help cancel out more negative emotions. Actually, we can take a step farther than that. We can work to generate positive emotions – say positive things to yourself and others – happiness is truly a chosen state of mind.

The mover of the earth and the empty sea, the great water god…earth-shaker, whom the gods gave double honours. You are the controller of horses, saviour of ships, hello Poseidon, earth-carrier dark-haired and happy god – your heart is good.

Homeric Hymn
