The Sun in Virgo and the Moon in Cancer

The Story

Emma Turner, a young nurse at Riverview General Hospital, quickly became a favourite among the staff despite her limited experience. Her meticulous attention to detail and extra-caring nature endeared her to patients and doctors alike. She greeted her patients with a warm smile each morning, ensuring their needs were met with precision and empathy. Her superiors praised her dedication; even the toughest doctors couldn’t help but admire her work ethic.

However, not everyone was pleased with Emma’s rise. Some more experienced nurses, like Sheila Lawson, viewed her popularity with suspicion and jealousy. Sheila, in particular, resented the attention Emma received, feeling that her years of service were being overshadowed by the new nurse’s rapid ascent.

One fateful afternoon, Emma was assigned to care for Mr Jenkins, an elderly man recovering from surgery. She double-checked his medication schedule, ensuring everything was in order before administering his treatment. However, later that evening, Mr. Jenkins suddenly went into a critical state. Doctors rushed in, stabilising him just in time.

The hospital administration launched an immediate investigation. It was discovered that Mr Jenkins had been given the wrong dose of medication, a mistake that nearly cost him his life. The blame fell squarely on Emma. Despite her protestations and spotless record, she was reprimanded, and her prospects for promotion were severely damaged. The once bright future she had at Riverview now seemed bleak and uncertain.

Feeling lost and unsure, Emma’s heart ached with unease. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but something felt off, and she couldn’t shake it.

She retraced her steps, reviewing every detail of Mr. Jenkins’ care. During this review, she discovered a crucial piece of evidence: a log entry showing that Sheila had accessed Mr. Jenkins’ chart just before the medication error occurred. Further investigation revealed surveillance footage of Sheila entering the medication room, which coincided with the error.

Emma’s mind raced as she held the incriminating evidence in her hands. She knew that bringing this to light would mean the end of Sheila’s career and reputation, but could she stay silent and let someone else fall for a mistake she didn’t make? Her conscience wrestled with the potential consequences of both choices as she struggled to find a resolution that wouldn’t have damaging repercussions.

Emma gazed up at her trusted mentor, Nurse Mary Collins, tears welling in her eyes. Her heart was heavy as she revealed the dilemma weighing on her and her concerns for her coworker Sheila, who seemed, of late, to be carrying the world’s weight on her shoulders.

There were whispers and rumours that Sheila was amid an acrimonious divorce. Emma’s heart went out to Shiela, Emma’s mother, who had suffered a devastating emotional breakdown when Emma’s father left.

“But what about Sheila?” Emma’s voice trembled with uncertainty. “If I speak up, she could lose her job and her only source of income. But if I keep quiet, am I blind to the turmoil she’s facing at home?”

Mary’s wise eyes met hers with understanding. “I know it’s not an easy decision, Emma. But the truth will always come out eventually. And as nurses, it’s our duty to ensure the safety and well-being of our patients.”

Despite a restless night filled with doubts and anxieties, Emma knew what to do. She brought her evidence to the hospital administrator with a heavy heart and a growing sense of unease. She couldn’t shake off the feeling that Sheila or some of her influential friends would retaliate for her speaking out against their misconduct. But Emma was determined to do what was right, no matter the consequences she may face.

The administration took immediate action. Sheila was called in for questioning, and when confronted with the evidence, she initially denied any wrongdoing. However, the proof was irrefutable. Eventually, she admitted to the mistake, though it was unclear whether it was intentional or a lapse in judgment fueled by her jealousy.

Sheila was dismissed from the hospital, her career in ruins. Emma felt a pang of guilt but knew she had done the right thing. The truth had to be known, and patient safety was paramount.

In the following weeks, the hospital’s atmosphere was tense, but things gradually began to settle. Emma’s reputation was restored, and the administration apologised for the misunderstanding. While her promotion was put on hold, she earned greater respect from her colleagues and superiors for her integrity and courage.

Emma continued her work with meticulous care and compassion, her resolve strengthened by the ordeal. She had learned that being a good nurse wasn’t just about skill and empathy but also about having the courage to stand up for the truth, even when it was difficult.

As Emma resumed her duties, she couldn’t shake the feeling that the ordeal with Sheila had opened a Pandora’s box. She began to notice small inconsistencies around the ward that were easy to overlook unless one was looking very closely. Medication records were not aligning perfectly, and patients’ charts were missing brief notes about their care—minor discrepancies that seemed to whisper of a deeper issue lurking beneath the surface.

As she finished her rounds one evening, Emma overheard two administrators speaking in hushed tones down the corridor. They discussed an upcoming audit and mentioned “irregularities” that must be “handled discreetly.” Their eyes flicked towards her, and they quickly fell silent as she approached, offering only tight-lipped smiles before continuing.

Emma lay in bed that night, her mind racing with questions. The pieces didn’t fit together yet, but something was unsettling in the air—a sense that the troubles at Riverview General were far from over. She closed her eyes, willing sleep to come, but it was futile. Her thoughts were already tumbling towards tomorrow’s uncertainties, towards shadows yet to be uncovered.

And just as dawn was breaking, a sharp knock at her door jolted Emma from her restless half-sleep. She rose to answer it, unaware that the person on the other side had a revelation that would irrevocably change her life at Riverview General Hospital.
