The Hollow Crown

Synopsis:

When an old folktale resurfaces in Falmouth about a cursed artifact hidden deep within the forest, Sylvia Moon and Lillian Hartley find themselves entangled in a mystery far older and more dangerous than any they’ve faced before. The Heart of Shadows, long thought to be a human relic of dark magic, was never truly theirs to claim—it once belonged to the Faerie Queen herself.

Strange occurrences draw them to the ruins of a forgotten stone circle, where the veil between worlds is thin. The deeper they venture, the more the natural world shifts—paths twisting into endless loops, shadows moving against the wind. Until, with one step too many, they cross into a realm that does not easily let go.

They are brought before the Faerie Queen, an ancient and fearsome ruler who has waited centuries for this moment. The Heart of Shadows was stolen from her long ago, twisted by human hands into something it was never meant to be. She wants it back. And now that Sylvia and Lillian have trespassed into her domain, they will not leave until they return what was stolen.

But the Heart is missing.

Bound by fae magic and held at the Queen’s mercy, the two women must navigate the perilous court of the Fair Folk, where bargains are deadly and deception is an art. Their only hope lies in Aeron, the Gloaming Prince—a disgraced fae noble with silver-kissed skin and storm-dark eyes, wings torn from an ancient punishment, and a past buried in broken oaths.

Aeron is no friend to the Queen, but his aid comes at a cost. He knows the truth about the Heart of Shadows—why it was taken, where it might be hidden, and why the Queen must never wield it again. To defy her is treason. To help Sylvia and Lillian is a death sentence. And yet, for reasons he refuses to name, he chooses to betray his own kind.

Even as Sylvia and Lillian escape the Queen’s grasp, Aeron is caught in her wrath, sentenced to be Unmade—stripped from existence itself. Sylvia’s magic and Lillian’s cunning save him at the last moment, but the Aeron who emerges is not the one who was lost. He is changed—unbound, untethered, a creature neither mortal nor fae. And a debt like his is never forgotten.

Months later, as their search for the Heart of Shadows continues, Aeron returns—but different. He is no longer bound to the Faerie Court, yet not fully human. He remembers his past, but something is missing. Parts of his identity, his power, his purpose have been shattered. He knows he should want revenge against the Queen—but something in him hesitates.

When the Heart is finally uncovered, it is Aeron who reveals the final, terrible truth: the Queen did not simply want it back. She wanted it so she could burn the old world away and forge something new.

Now, Sylvia and Lillian face an impossible choice:

  • Give the Heart to the Faerie Queen and watch the world shift in ways no mortal can predict.
  • Keep it from her and risk the wrath of a ruler who does not forget betrayals.

And Aeron?

  • He does not promise his loyalty. But he does promise this: when the final choice is made, he will be there.

The Final Confrontation: The Hollow Hill

The battle reaches its peak at the hollow hill, an ancient place where the veil between worlds is weakest. The Queen arrives not in fury, but in certainty. She extends a hand, and the air tightens like a closing fist.

“You have what is mine.”

The Queen does not simply want the Heart returned—she wants to erase everything it has touched. The town of Falmouth, its people, its entire history shaped by the Heart’s presence—all of it could be undone.

Aeron steps forward, his presence humming with the last remnants of his lost power. “You don’t just want to heal the wound. You want to rewrite history with yourself victorious.”

The Queen smiles. “And what of it?”

Sylvia, ever the mystic, refuses. Scars tell stories. They remind us of what was lost, what was learned, what was endured. But the Queen is unmoved.

The Heart of Shadows pulses, waiting for a choice. And Aeron makes it.

He kneels before the Queen—not in submission, but in defiance. He claims no court, no master. He is what she left behind, and he is what will stand in her way.

Sylvia and Lillian must decide:

  • Give the Heart to the Queen and risk her reshaping the past.
  • Destroy the Heart—but risk unraveling all the magic connected to it, including Aeron himself.
  • Bind the Heart to something new—something neither fae nor mortal.

Sylvia, guided by instinct and magic, makes the final choice. She presses the Heart of Shadows into Aeron’s chest.

The Queen shrieks—not in anger, but in realization.

The Heart of Shadows no longer belongs to her. It no longer belongs to the mortal world. It belongs to Aeron.

The Queen steps back, her expression unreadable. Then, slowly, she smiles. “Very well. We will see how the wheel turns now.” And she vanishes, leaving behind a world that is forever changed.

Aeron, alive but altered, stands before them. The battle is won, but fate has been rewritten. The Heart of Shadows still exists—but now, it beats inside a man who has no true place in either world.

He looks at Sylvia and Lillian, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. “Well. That was dramatic.”

Lillian sighs. “It’s not over, is it?”

Aeron’s eyes darken, the pulse of the Heart flickering beneath his skin.

“Not even close.”

And somewhere, in the space between worlds, the Faerie Queen smiles.

Because she knows: a wheel always turns
