Behind Closed Doors

Edward led a quiet, philosophically-inspired life in a small seaside town by the coast of Devon, England. He appeared to be a solid rock, content and unmoving from the outside. But behind closed doors, his days were filled with secrets and sorrow that he could never share.

His wife Margot was like a bottle of champagne, always on the brink of exploding. With her fiery temper and complete control over their relationship, she was both the passion and the poison in Edward’s life. Despite their differences, he found solace in their marriage and the peaceful routine of their household.

For eighteen years, Margot poured her heart and soul into their daughter Emily, unknowingly acting as the glue that held Edward’s crumbling marriage together.

Her love for their child was the only light in his otherwise bleak world. But everything changed when Emily was sent away for an arranged marriage in a different time zone.

As Edward tried to adjust to life without Emily’s presence, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off with Margot. Although she had taken up gardening again, her previous professional passion before their marriage, her smiles seemed forced and her words hollow. She should have been happier than ever, but for some reason, she was not. Then, one day, while searching for a pen in a drawer, Edward stumbled upon undeniable proof of Margot’s affair with the local gardener – a man of dirt and sun with a mischievous grin always ready with a joke or witty remark.

The sight of her betrayal tore at his heart and shattered the fragile peace he had clung to. As he struggled to understand the truth, whispers behind his back, pitying glances, and whispered rumours shamed him. But what truly broke him was learning that Margot had indulged in all the wild fantasies he had kept hidden from everyone – including her. It felt like a deep betrayal of his very being.

As Edward tried to confront Margot about her infidelity and maintain some sense of normalcy in their crumbling marriage, he discovered that everyone in their neighbourhood had known about it for months. The slow realisation of how many people knew about his pain only added to his feelings of betrayal and isolation.

In this once peaceful home, now filled with tension and secrets, Edward couldn’t help but wonder – how long had this been going on? And what else did Margot know about him that he didn’t know himself? It seemed like their entire marriage had been a lie, and the weight of it all felt like a heavy burden on Edward’s shoulders.

But even through his devastation, Edward knew he had to keep up appearances and not let his emotions run wild. He continued his meditative practices, using them as a fragile dam to hold back the flood of emotions within.

One day, months later, as Edward sat on the couch, scrolling through his phone, a familiar name popped up on the screen – Emily. His heart skipped a beat as he read her message, informing him of her return home after a failed marriage. A mix of emotions flooded through him – excitement at the thought of seeing her again, sadness for her pain, and fear of the difficult conversations they would have to face.

As the days turned into weeks, tension filled the house where Margot and Edward lived. Despite her efforts to act normally, Margot could feel the heaviness of Edward’s silence in response. Emily, their daughter, noticed the strain but was too consumed with her pain to intervene.

Edward sat uncomfortably in his seat, burdened by the weight of his actions. He used to spend his days in tranquillity, but now they stretched on endlessly as he immersed himself in silent meditation—a coping mechanism that felt like both a shield and a prison. As he sat with the two people who once brought him joy, he couldn’t help but wonder if their relationship could ever be repaired.

While Emily’s presence provided temporary relief, it couldn’t mask the unresolved anger and hurt beneath the surface.

Finally, one evening, the dam broke as they all silently sat together. Unable to contain his suppressed emotions, Edward addressed Margot directly. His usually composed voice shook with the weight of his pain.

“Margot,” he said firmly, “we need to discuss whether our marriage can continue.”

For a brief moment, Margot met his gaze before quickly looking away. Edward’s words now dulled her once vibrant and full-of-life spirit. She tried to hide her trembling hands as she nervously twisted her wedding ring—a physical manifestation of their unravelling marriage that had spanned decades.

As Emily tearfully left the room, Margot was silently alone with Edward. The familiar tick-tock of their grandfather clock seemed to count down to an inevitable outcome that could change their lives forever.

With each rotation of her wedding ring, Margot felt the weight of their shared history bearing down on her. As Edward took a deep breath and prepared to speak again, she couldn’t help but wonder if this would be the final blow to shatter their fragile relationship – and if they could ever piece it back together again.

But before Edward could break the tension between them, the doorbell rang, startling them both out of their thoughts. For a moment, Margot felt a flicker of hope that this interruption would postpone their impending confrontation. However, as Edward hesitantly approached the door, she knew that whatever was on the other side would only add fuel to the fire of their tumultuous relationship.

Her heart racing, Margot braced for what was to come—a wave of emotions and revelations that had been building up for far too long. The opening of this door could mean so much more than just letting in an unexpected guest; it signalled the beginning of another chapter in their constantly evolving story.
