Working with Your Lunar Nodes

unknownThe nodes are oft associated with karma and reincarnation – the South Node representing what you’ve accomplished in past lives (both good and bad) and the North Node representing what you are meant to accomplish during your present incarnation. But even if you don’t believe in karma or reincarnation, you can still benefit from working with your nodes.

Consider that the South Node represents energy with which it’s easy for you to work while the North Node represents not just challenges but also opportunities to develop new skills, attitudes, and perspectives.

In my chart, the (mean) nodal axis is Capricorn/Cancer suggesting that while I can easily handle domestic situations (family, home, and all things Cancerian), I’m challenged when it comes to my worldly ambitions.untitled

Despite my apparently ‘successful’ 30 plus year career in international tax law, I can assure you that I have been challenged – each and every step that I took along my career path was painful, not the least because such a path was unusual (if not actively discouraged) for women of my generation. This was brought home to me in spades when, about 25 years ago, I found myself working for a female tax partner in the Netherlands whose nodal axis was exactly opposite mine (this will always be the case with people born 9 years – or multiples of 9 years apart). She was the epitome of what I knew that I was meant to be. But as she pushed me along the same path that she’d taken, I realised that I didn’t really have the heart or courage to be what she’d become. I blamed her but in reality, it wasn’t her fault. Never forget that your nodes are just waiting for someone to activate them.

unknownWith North Node in Capricorn, my task is to build a separate life, business, and/or career that is mine, and mine alone. I am meant to toughen up – become an elder – a ‘wise’ one – develop a savvy attitude vis a vis the outside world. I must move out of my comfort zone (South Node) and go for the adventure (North Node). In this regard, my Sun in Libra and my Moon in Gemini (nodes are by their very nature intimately connect with the Sun and Moon) can help me and they did (Sun in Libra = justice/diplomacy and Moon in Gemini = education/communication – all good stuff for a lawyer).

But even more important is my Saturn in Libra, which because it is in square aspect to my nodal axis is that extra piece of important information with which I must come to terms on my journey from Cancer to Capricorn. Because of the square to the nodal axis, my Saturn also has the responsibility of distributing my time and energy between the nodes. Never forget that although you’re supposed to ‘do’ your North Node, you still have your South Node to fall back on; think of it as a  place of temporary retreat.

Unfortunately, I’m still coming to terms with how my Saturn in Libra is trying to help me. I hoped that with my second Saturn return (aged 59) I’d finally figure it out. I was disappointed. The only thing that I learned during that time was that I no longer had any enthusiasm to pursue ‘worldly ambitions’ – at least in regards to my career in international tax law. Saturn slows us down and makes us take a cold hard look at the realities we’ve built in our lives. I saw only that it was going to be a long, hard slog to retirement when at last, I would be free to follow my real passion, astrology. Now that retirement has finally arrived, it remains for me to get back in touch again with my North Node and set up my new business, whatever form it will take.

Lost at Sea

With the Sun in Pisces (dissipation) and the Moon in Cancer (emotional response), today and tomorrow are Eight of Hearts days.

The Eight of Hearts signifies sadness.

You’re lost in a sea of loss and disillusion.

The waters are deep, dark, stagnant;

Pools and fens,

lost_at_seaMud and miasmas.

Can you never break free?

In Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, Lysander comforts Hermia, whose father has delivered an ultimatum that she must either marry the man of his choice, or ‘abjure forever the society of men’.

not nice

incredibly painful

plain, old unfair.

It’s near impossible to react calmly and sanely under the conditions of the Eight of Hearts.  Hermia chooses to run run away with her lover; too bad for her that life in the woods with the fairies wasn’t much better.

  • Unproductive job?
  • Emotionally draining relationship?
  • Abandoning a project into which you’ve infused too much of yourself?

Take time out. Retreat to a safe environment. Meditate. Procure good advice. Then, if the only way to move forward is to cut your losses, steel yourself, muster courage, and take the decision.

Today and Tomorrow are Phlegmatic / Melancholic Days

With the Sun in Cancer (cold/wet) and the Moon in Virgo (cold/dry), its Phlegmatic/Melancholic couple of days.

As you will recall, humoural theory is based on the ancient and medieval physiology and medicine as expounded by Empedocles, Hippocrates, and Galen – it’s all to do with the four block or ‘roots’ of the material world that manifest in certain humours and their related temperaments:

ELEMENT QUALITY HUMOUR TEMPERAMENT
Fire Hot/dry Yellow Bile Choleric
Earth Cold/dry Black Bile Melancholic
Water Cold/wet Phlegm Phlegmatic
Air Hot/wet Blood Sanguine

You may also recall that we experienced Phlegmatic/Melancholic energy earlier this month (1 July) when the Moon was in Capricorn; that energy was unpleasantly sobering, rather like a cold shower. That was because Saturn rules Capricorn and he isn’t known for being jolly. Indeed Saturn is usually cautiously ambitious to a fault.

MercuryBut this time the energy will be different because Mercury rules Virgo and he brings a much lighter energy to bear. In classical mythology, Mercury is the trickster god and hence like the Fool card in the tarot, has no fixed agenda. Indeed his is a spontaneous approach to life and although he rushes in where angels may fear to tread, he is usually successful. This is because whilst like Saturn he has developed significant wisdom, unlike Saturn, he isn’t overly cautious. Mercury isn’t remotely as self-focused as is Saturn and hence doesn’t envision life as an ego-trip.

Hence the energy today is still reserved and serious but not inflexible. The best way to handle this is to lighten up a bit – that makes it easier to see where you’re headed.

Today and Tomorrow are Phlegmatic/Choleric Days

ob1840With the Sun in Cancer (cold/wet) and the Moon in Leo (hot/dry), its Phlegmatic/Choleric couple of days.

As you will recall, humoural theory is based on the ancient and medieval physiology and medicine as expounded by Empedocles, Hippocrates, and Galen – it’s all to do with the four block or ‘roots’ of the material world that manifest in certain humours and their related temperaments:

ELEMENT QUALITY HUMOUR TEMPERAMENT
Fire Hot/dry Yellow Bile Choleric
Earth Cold/dry Black Bile Melancholic
Water Cold/wet Phlegm Phlegmatic
Air Hot/wet Blood Sanguine

You may also recall that we also had Phlegmatic/Choleric energy earlier (29 June) but that was with the Moon in Sagittarius; the energy was dreamy – but not lazy – sluggish but still merry. That was because Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter (exalted in and happy with Cancer) whose job it is to bring not only wealth but also inspiration to our lives.

Now the Moon is in Leo and this Phlegmatic/Choleric energy is characterised by the planetary cycles inherent between the sun and moon. This is because Cancer is ruled by the Moon and Leo, is ruled by the Sun. But their relationship is reversed (the Moon rules Cancer but is now in Leo and the Sun rules Leo but is in Cancer).

Cancer takes the back seat = faithful, stable, lethargic, conservative.

Leo  takes the front seat = boasting, enthusiastic, generous, impatient.

This makes the energy of today and tomorrow much more like that of Choleric/Phlegmatic which is both hardy and impassioned.

Some key words for this energy include:

  • Determined
  • Assertive
  • Touchy
  • Impulsive

Today and Tomorrow lead up to the Phlegmatic new moon

imagesWith both the Sun and Moon in Cancer (cold/wet) it’s going to be a Phlegmatic couple of days until the new Moon at 26 CA 14 on the 16th of July, 1:25 AM, GMT.

As you may recall, humoural theory is based on the ancient and medieval physiology and medicine as expounded by Empedocles, Hippcorates, and Galen – it’s all to do with the four block or ‘roots’ of the material world that manifest in certain humours and their related temperaments:

ELEMENT QUALITY HUMOUR TEMPERAMENT
Fire Hot/dry Yellow Bile Choleric
Earth Cold/dry Black Bile Melancholic
Water Cold/wet Phlegm Phlegmatic
Air Hot/wet Blood Sanguine

Earlier (27 June), we had another Phegmatic couple of days when the Sun was in Cancer and the Moon in Scorpio. But because Mars is the classical ruler of Scorpio, that time was characterised by getting bogged down by your feelings.

This time its going to be different.

This is because whilst Mars imparts a martial or war-like atmosphere and hence a feeling of being at odds with one’s feelings, the Moon in Cancer is in its sign of rulership. Hence it is more than capable of supporting your feelings – indeed it enhances them in a good way.

All this is making way for that new moon which symbolises a time to plant seeds for the future, to open the door to the energy  you need to pull into your life to make it all happen.

The new moon in Cancer is a good time to commit to those personal goals that not only honour your deepest, most intimate feelings but also support your personal security and safety.

From now until that new moon, you have a opportunity to get ready.

Phlegmatic key words include:

  • Conservative
  • Thoughtful
  • Cautious
  • Patient
  • Reflective

Today is a Phlegmatic/Sanguine kind of day – chill out, observe, deliberate

With the Sun in Cancer (cold/wet) and the Moon in Gemini (hot/wet) it’s going to be a Phlegmatic/Sanguine kind of day.

As you may recall, humoural theory is based on the ancient and medieval physiology and medicine as expounded by Empedocles, Hippocrates, and Galen – it’s all to do with the four block or ‘roots’ of the material world that manifest in certain humours and their related temperaments:

Earlier (4th July), we had another Phlegmatic/Sanguine day when the Sun was in Cancer and the Moon in Aquarius. The by-word then was having the ability to take a decision and stick with it – because fixed energy is what Aquarius is all about.

Today is different.Temperaments-Pooh

Not only is Gemini mutable (exactly how it sounds – fluid, flowing) but it is ruled by Mercury, the trickster god – who is known for (guess what?) playing tricks. But Mercury doesn’t play just any old tricks – his aim is not to poke fun but to teach/communicate and the message he’s trying to get through is that whilst you think it’s time to take a decision it isn’t because you don’t yet have all the information you need.

The trick with this energy is to chill out (Phlegmatic) and observe – be as slow and deliberate as you can whilst at the same time (Sanguine) pay attention and go with the flow. Don’t worry if you don’t feel like you’re getting anywhere at the moment because it’s only with the new moon (in Cancer) on 16th July, that it will be time to make your move.

Today and Tomorrow are Phlegmatic Days

With the Sun in Cancer (cold/wet) and the Moon in Pisces (cold/wet) it’s going to be a Phlegmatic couple of days.

You may recall that humoural theory is based on the ancient and medieval physiology and medicine as expounded by Empedocles, Hippocrates, and Galen – it’s all to do with the four blocks or ‘roots’ of the material world that manifest in certain humours and their related temperaments:

ELEMENT QUALITY HUMOUR TEMPERAMENT

Earth Cold/dry Black Bile Melancholic
Water Cold/wet Phlegm Phlegmatic
Air Hot/wet Blood Sanguine

Often we experience various combinations of the four humours resulting in mixed temperaments – the more balanced between the four humours – the better but the bad news is that with this energy, there is no way to achieve balance.

The good news, however, is that this is not the cold shower as when we had Sun/Cancer – Moon/Scorpio combination. With Jupiter as the traditional ruler of Pisces, the water feels much different than with Scorpio, the traditional ruler of which is Mars.

As you might imagine the energy ruled by Mars is martial – or warlike. But unlike Mars in Aries (which it also ruPhlegmatic-Pictureles) where the energy is fiery and bright, the energy in Scorpio is dark and dangerous because water cools down fiesty Mars – hence the cold shower.

But now the Phlegmatic energy is different because instead of Mars, we have Jupiter involved – and his traditional astrological job is to bring worldly wealth and priestly wisdom.

Hence this is a moist, wet – dreamy kind of energy – the kind that is best used for learning great lessons and making pleasant plans.
