Happy Birthday Ms X!!

tam SRThe Solar Return (SR) is an astrological map for the next 12 months and the Sun (SO) is the most significant planet in the SR chart – it’s position indicating where you’ll spend the most time and energy. With SO in your SR 4th house, your focus for the next 12 months will be on your home. With this placement, it’s not uncommon for ‘home’ (however defined) to become somehow unsuitable. Expect downsizing, upsizing, improvements – or even an unanticipated and perhaps hasty sale?

Neptune (NE) is also in your 4th SR house. This adds an element of uncertainty and perhaps, sacrifice to your home. Expect delays and confusion. Possibly, either you or your husband will take a new job in a distant location. Other possibilities include your parents and/or children coming back to live with you – whatever happens, try to take any disruption with a pinch of salt. Your SR Moon (MO) is in a tight (trine) aspect with your SR SO suggesting that domestic responsibilities could stir up a strong emotional response – unpleasant or not  isn’t yet known. What is known, however, is that because your SR MO is in the 1st house, your emotions may feel overwhelming – focus on your own emotional needs as opposed to capitulating to those of others.

Your SR SO is also in a very tight Square (SQ) – i.e. difficult – aspect with Saturn (SA). Because SA is in your 2nd SR house, developments regarding your home will likely be the result of money issues. SA is often experienced not only as uncomfortable but also as unfair – almost as if fate is at work against you. But in reality, SA is only asking that you accept responsibility for your situation. If you need to make do with a less, then do so but don’t let this negatively impact your feelings of self-worth.

Now for some good news – some really good news!images

SR Venus (VE) is conjunct your SR Mercury (ME) and together, they’re in your SR 5th house. You’re set for very creative – especially re: writing and other forms of communication – this will also be a year during which you will gain more confidence in your creative endeavours. This next 12-month period is an excellent time to launch creative new ideas because the reception you’ll receive from the outside world will likely not only bring you a great deal of pleasure but also money. Because SR Uranus (UR) is also in your 5th house, opportunities that come your way will likely be quirky and/or very unexpected– follow the flow – and the more diplomatically you negotiate  a particular deal, the more likely you are to get what you want. With SR UR also in the 5th house, it’s important that you express yourself freely and uniquely in regards to your creative endeavours. Because UR is TR SA, you may find those blockages that held you back in the past are now falling by the wayside.

part of fortunePractice makes perfect and so yet another analysis of the Part of Fortune – this time for Madonna:

In summary, to make lots of money you want:

  • One of the rulers (sign or term) of the Part of Fortune strong in the chart (by rulership or exaltation).
  • One of rulers in an angular house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th) preferably conjunct the angle).
  • The primary ruler (strongest of the rulers) also making tight aspect to an angular Part of Fortune.
  • Another the rulers also making an aspect to the Part of Fortune.
    ____________________________________________

  1. Madonna’s Part of Fortune is 25 Virgo 41 = ASC – Sun + Moon by Day.I013319.QG_Eddhd7AVhWUvAU6kiDw.c2atw.250
  2. Mercury rules 25 Virgo 41 by sign and Mars rules it by term.
  3. Mercury and Mars are the rulers of Madonna’s Part of Fortune.
  4. In Madonna’s chart, Mercury is in rulership in Virgo and on the ASC (and hence in the 1st house which is angular) BINGO – tick points one and two in the make lots of money summary above.
  5. Mercury does not make an aspect to Madonna’s Part of Fortune. Oh, well, too bad. No tick for for point three in the make lots of money summary.
  6. However Mercury is closely plugged into all the angles (ASC and MC) – and it is functioning extremely strongly (and effectively because it’s in rulership) in Madonna’s life. Good.
  7. In Madonna’s chart, Mars is at 15 Taurus 23 and cadent in the 11th This is not particuarly good nor is it particularly bad.
  8. However Mars does make a wide trine to the Point of Fortune. So a partial tick to point four in the make lots of money summary above.
  9. As this is a diurnal chart (Madonna was born just after sunrise), we look to the Sun for more information.
  10. The Sun is in the 12th house (cadent – not so good) at 23 Leo 07 in rulership – The dispositor of the Sun is also the Sun (this is always the case when a planet is in rulership). DOUBLE BINGO – another tick to point one in the make lots of money summary above.
  11. The Sun does not make an apsect to the Part of Fortune. You can’t have it all.
  12. Can Madonna make pots of money? You bet.
  13. Is this accomplished through her profession or vocation?
  14. Let’s see:
  15. Mercury is the ruler of her (Gemini) MC.
  16. So tick one for Mercury.
  17. The Moon (11 Virgo 30 and also ruled by Mercury and in the 1st house – angular and conjunct the ASC – good, good) is applying next to Mars.
  18. So tick one for Mars.
  19. No planet is ‘at the bendings’ (i.e. square the nodal axis at 24 Libra/Aries).
  20. Mercury is in greatest dignity (by sign and term) and it forms part of the Sun’s rather good doryphory (Mercury, Moon, Jupiter, and Venus).
  21. Hence Mercury rules Madonna’s profession.
  22. According to Bonatti, Mercury in its own terms suggests ‘the person will have rank and share in secret knowledge’. He further goes on to suggest that if Mercury is also in rulership, ‘they will be very honest and sober’.
  23. Traditionally Mercury is associated with merchants (buying & selling). In more modern astrology, Mercury is associated with communication of all sorts – and because Pluto (OK – that’s cheating using a modern planet – forgive me?) is closely conjuct Madonna’s Mercury, whatever she communicates will resound deeply and powerfully in the collective. This is further amplified by Mercury’s close sextile to Neptune, planet associated with performers and dreams.
  24. In summary –  Mercury, the dispostior of her Part of Fortune as well as her profession, is in rulership by sign and term. Mercury is angular and conjunct an angle (the ASC). Mercury is plugged tightly into all the angles (ASC and MC). Mercury is also the ruler of the MC which suggests she is known for her fortune and ability to communicate. Madonna would have been even more successful if Mercury (or Mars or the Sun) had closely aspected her Part of Fortune (however Mars does make a wide 10 degree trine so it does help in part).

Egyptian Zodiac Taurus

Continuing my serious study of classical (Medieval) astrology, I now delve into one of the most famous Arabic Parts, the Part of Fortune.

The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that we can’t negotiate directly with the gods (i.e. the planets). Hence we must approach the gods through their Arabic parts (as shown in our natal charts). It’s rather like praying to a statue with the belief this somehow channels you to the spiritual reality of that which such statue represents.

In the mind-set of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the Sun represents Spirit while the Moon represents matter or physical form.

Algebraically put your Sun and Moon together (bring spirit to matter) along with your ascendant (or ASC = degree on the horizon where the sun rose the day you were born) and this becomes a very personalised pointer to how and where you make money.

______________

With his culture’s eye for trading and capitalism, the Roman Firmicus Maternus gives us a reliable method for looking at your chart in this way:

Therefore observe who is the ruler of the sign and of the degree of the Part of Fortune, that is, in whose terms the Part is; also in what house each ruler is, whether on first or second angles, in favourable or dejected houses, in their exaltation or fall; whether each ruler is in aspect to the Part of Fortune and if they, on the angles, are in aspect to each other.

When you have carefully investigated all this, then observe who is the ruler of the degree of the Moon (in a nocturnal chart) or of the Sun (in a diurnal chart) and see if this ruler is in aspect to the Part of Fortune. If one planet is found to be the ruler of all these degrees and is favourable located in signs in which he rejoices, or in his exaltation, or in his own house, this indicates a lucky chart. ….

But if there is not one ruler of the sign of the Part of Fortune and of its terms and of the terms of the Sun or the Moon, the one which has the greatest power should be the most important in the forecast.

If none of these stars (planets) is favourable located, the native will be oppressed by ill fortune to the end of his life.

The following is the analysis for Ms X who although she has married into significant wealth, wishes to know her potential to generate wealth in her own name.

___________

Reminder of the formula set out by that capitalist Roman, Firmicus Maternus:

In practice, this works as follows for Ms X (a diurnal chart):

  • Her Part of Fortune is 7 Sagittarius 07 = ASC – Sun by day + Moon. It is in the 7th house (highlighting wealth coming through partnership, in this case by marriage).
  • Jupiter rules Sag (Sagittarius)– so Jupiter rules the sign of her Part of Fortune.
  • The term ruler of 7 Sag 07 is also Jupiter.
  • In the chart of Ms X, Jupiter is at 22 Taurus 50 – spot on conjunct with the ASC (angular in a very big and very good way).
  • Jupiter in Taurus is neither in rulership nor exaltation– but it is very happy & exceedingly powerful in this chart. Not only is in conjunct the ASC (life force) but also in trine to the midheaven or MC.
  • Does Ms X have capacity to generate riches?
  • Absolutely !! (She has already done very well through marriage).
  • According to Bonatti’s Liber Hermetis, Jupiter in Taurus (in sect) ‘brings great riches and happiness linked with glory. The person will be the ruler of villas, estates, buildings.’ (NB – Ms X does have homes in several countries). Not only that but she ‘will receive benefits from women and may have a high social profile because of women.’
  • Is there potential for it to all go wrong?
  • Sadly, yes.
  • The Jupiter of Ms X is in the terms of Saturn. Take heed here – for Bonatti warns that because of this, ‘whatever is gained can be lost.’
  • To determine how much a problem this might pose, we look to the Sun and Moon and their rulers by term. Both the Sun and Moon are cadent (12th and 6th house respectively) which suggests potential to ‘fall from grace’ (at least in regards to wealth). The term rulers of the Sun and Moon (Mars and Mercury respectively) suggest pretty much the same thing (Mars being a malefic and in opposition with Saturn, the other malefic, and Mercury – while not particularly damaged, is out of sect and cadent). Further, we look to the triplicity rulers of her 2nd house (Gemini = Air) – and are pleased to find that in the 3rd and final period of her life, Jupiter (in excellent condition) gives her the ability to generate and hold enough wealth to comfortably get by.
  • Because this is a diurnal chart (she was born after sunrise), we must also look to the Sun and its rulers to determine ability to achieve and hold wealth.
  • The Sun of Ms X is at 27 Pisces 31. Jupiter the ruler by sign of Pisces and we know from our above analysis where that stands.
  • The term ruler of 27 Pisces 31 is Mars which in the chart of Ms X, is at 19 Virgo 15 in the 5th house (succedent). This is not a particularly bad place for Mars nor is it particularly good either. However having said that, Mars does pick up quite a bit of power being is ‘at the bends’ (i.e. in square aspect to the lunar nodes). Unfortunately Mars does not aspect the angles (MC or ASC) nor does it aspect the Part of Fortune.
  • Hence Mars and Jupiter are the indicators of the ability of Ms X to generate (and keep) wealth.
  • Mars is not in the best of conditions – even though it is very powerful (suggesting it powerfully influences in not particularly helpful ways). According to Bonatti, Mars in Virgo (in sect) indicates ‘dealers in arms and evil men of evil manner who pursue evil purposes’. Oh dear. Best not to take that too literally. Also according to Bonatti, with Mars in the terms of Venus ‘this person will see the death of their partner yet twill have many lovers and beautiful daughters.’ Best not to take this too literally either. Bonatti was writing in the 17th century and things were quite different then.
  • Regarding the best career choice for Ms X – we first look to Mercury (because the Moon is applying to Mercury).
  • The Mercury of Ms X is at 15 Aries 24 in the 12th house (cadent). Cadency suggests little or no power in the ‘establishment’ sense – leaving the focus more on a profession where service is key. Cadency also suggests that Ms X is not so much interested in acquiring personal power or gain through her profession. That’s good because the cadency of her Mercury suggests she is not particularly effective at doing so.
  • However Mercury is in its own terms – which suggests that it is amongst friends. According to Bonatti, Mercury in its own terms suggests ‘the person will have rank and share in secret knowledge’. Traditionally Mercury is associated with merchants (buying & selling). In more modern astrology, Mercury is associated with communication of all sorts including writing (the idea of ‘secrets’ is also highlighted by modern astrology through association with the 12th house). Mercury is not connected with the angles (ASC or MC) and only very widely trines the Part of Fortune. This suggests Ms X may not make much money in professions associated with Mercury.
  • Because Mars is ‘at the bends’, it is also a strong significator of profession. Traditionally Mars is linked to the warrior classes. Today it might equate to anything connected arguments/disputes and/or sharp (knife/blade) things – such as being a butcher or surgeon or a judge who resolves disputes in a court of law. The Mars of Ms X is likewise not connected with the angles and again only widely squares the Part of Fortune suggesting she is unlikely to make significant money from these professions.
  • However – good news when we look to her status in regards to profession – Venus (1st triplicity ruler of the 10th house) – and because Venus is exalted in Pisces (and not cadent) and its own triplicity ruler is Jupiter (strong and connected with the angles) Ms X could achieve some fame (if not fortune) in her chosen profession.
  • This is further confirmed by her immensely powerful solar doryphory – or train of attendants – including Venus, Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury and the Moon. In the chart of Ms X, the Sun has lots of help and support. This is good.
  • In summary Ms X has tremendous potential to accumulate significant wealth (most likely through partnership/marriage) however she equally has the potential to lose it again. This is a real danger. However there is the suggestion that in later life she has the ability to accumulate and hold enough wealth in order to get comfortably by. In regards to profession, careers relating to merchandising, communication, dispute resolution are highlighted and although Ms X is likely to acquire some status and recognition in regards to her career, it is unlikely she will acquire significant wealth from it.ph88

UnknownWith the Sun and Moon both in Sagittarius (NEW MOON !!!), today and tomorrow are Days of ‘The Fool’.

Wide-eyed and bushy-tailed, The Fool is about to jump off a cliff.

Why would he do that, you ask?

Good question.

Here’s what I think.

The Fool isn’t a fool in the ordinary sense. Indeed, he represents the most enlightened energy in the deck.  He’s the archetypal youngest son in fairy tales in whom initially, no one had faith.

And so our young man set outs with nothing and returns having conquered the world. Not only has he recovered the lost treasure, married the pretty princess, and fathered a stable of beautiful children, but he also has the fidelity to return home to share his gain. While his older brothers, in whom their father had placed his promise, the Fool is bright and sunny for he alone has succeeded big time.

Unlike those brothers, the Fool didn’t over analyse. Nor did he try to be cute or clever. He didn’t even try to rely on patronage and family connections. He just went out there and by sheer force of character ‘did’.

The Fool is the real hero of the tarot. That’s why you’ll often find him both at the beginning and the end of the (Major Aracana) deck.  He started out modest and simple and despite his ‘wins’, he returns the same way. This doesn’t mean he hasn’t grown. On the contrary, it suggests he’s perfected his self par excellence.

For despite all the heart ache and disappointment he’s experienced during his travels, The Fool refuses to let any of it get him down. He’s just as adventurous, curious, and cheerful when he returns as when he first left. That’s not easy, as I’m sure you know because most of us have let our trials and tribulations get the better of us – to the point in which some of us no longer even try.

Days of ‘The Fool’ offer a unique opportunity to put the past behind you and start all over again. Remember what it felt like when you first set out to conquer life?

I bet you can do it again.

Pisces-Sept07-DE7863sAR800Is the urge to spirituality innate?

Carl Jung certainly thought so.

He suggested the need to make connection with something greater than yourself is only make you feel truly alive.

One way to look for this connection is through your natal birth chart. You must be prepared, however, to look further afield than Jupiter and Neptune –  the ‘usual’ astrological significations of spirituality. Remember that every planet represented in your chart, was once a god or goddess in his or her own right.

Naturally this isn’t easy – getting in touch with the numinous. It could even be dangerous. As Liz Greene has always been quick to remind us, personally expressing the energies of outer planets like Uranus, Neptune and Pluto can not only be overwhelming but pathological.

So for now we’ll stick to the inner planets – are you up to the challenge?

To get an idea how this might work for you, look at your strongest and most influential planets (by sign and house placement)– and don’t forget the ruler of your ascendant – your chart ruler. For example, with Libra rising focus on your Venus. If your Sun is in Leo (the Sun rules Leo), then look there. If your Jupiter is in Cancer (where it is exalted) then focus on that.

While reading the rest of this post, lease keep in mind that for these purposes, ‘spirituality’ = finding a sense of meaning and purpose through connecting with that which lies beyond your ken.

Sun Solar energy is key to how you bring spiritual urges into personal expression  – this is accomplished not by sacrificing your ego, but by honouring it. You are every bit as much a part of creation as everyone – and everything – else. Because, as myths of ancient Egypt remind us, the Sun passes through the underworld (below the horizon) each and every day, your solar experience of spirituality could even manifest as a life and death struggle.

For example, with Sun in Scorpio you might undergo psychoanalysis –or act as a therapist (or shaman) for others in this way. That which you extract from working with your unconscious (for example, by dream work) may give you a sense of that which lies beyond.

Moon Lunar energy manifests through feelings of belonging and shared experience. Get tactile – get earthy – even organic – the lunar experience of spirituality is not about flying off to some lofty place – but about embodiment. The connection here is through the circle of life – in this earth plane.

For example, with Moon in Taurus you might  go to classes in yoga, undertake communal gardening, or even practice Zen Buddhism. The more you get in touch with your shared physical world, the more you’ll feel in touch with the lunar version of the divine.

Mercury With Mercury, spirituality is about discovery, solving problems, and making connections.  This doesn’t have much place in Piscean religions like Christianity because to question too much is considered to destroy faith. But as the great astronomical shift from the Age or Pisces into the Age of Aquarius progresses, Mercury can be expected to again take centre stage. For the power of ‘comprehension’ was worshipped as a god by the ancients– through the development of language and the discovery of how to harness ‘tools’ like the wheel.

For example, with Mercury in Gemini you might take up blogging – not just the kind where you shoot off the first thing that comes to mind, but that which takes research and serious consideration.

Venus The key to Venusian spirituality is not only that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but also it can be found everywhere. In this regard, beauty is not just pretty or cute or nice – but that which literally brings tears to your eyes. Real beauty (once a key component of the ‘sublime’) by the very nature of the experience takes you ‘out of yourself’. Take your cue from the Renaissance whence art was considered not only the most natural expression of spiritual feeling but also the containment of the quintessence of reality.

For example, with Venus in Libra, you might take a course in art history or even learn to paint and draw. If it’s beautiful to you, then it carries some aspect of the divine for you and your job is to appreciate that for what it is.

Mars Most are familiar with the image of an angry god – just have a look at the Bible’s Old Testament. But Martian spirituality can also manifest in heroic undertakings like ‘fight’ for what is ‘right’. The trick here is to make sure you’ve really got a grip on whatever it is that for which you’re fighting = with Mars, it easy to get lost with  ‘might’ makes ‘right’.  Important civilizing qualities like tolerance and understanding are not Martian things.

For example, with Mars in Aries you might volunteer to work in a rape crisis call centre or train to work as part of an ambulance or other rescue team– anything what will get you into touch with the many manifestations of violence and aggression will help you to understand that the divine truly has many face.

Jupiter Astrological Jupiter can function as your personal connection to the ‘divine plan’ – however it is that you perceive it.The idea is to plug into the ‘global context’ – to become connected with that which is truly outside yourself. When you find meaning in the greater patterns of the world, you’ve found the path to your own spiritual growth.

For example, with Jupiter in Sagittarius, you might take up the study of comparative religion – with the expectation that learning about the many manifestations of ‘Divine’ across time and cultures might will help you to get a grip on what’s right for you.

Saturn Saturn is oft associated with the teachings of traditional religions because it is so keen on ‘following rules’. But don’t forget that Saturn can also focus its quest for spirituality through other types of laws like those of science or society.

For example, with Saturn in Capricorn, you might  become involved with your local church. Not just in a superficial way like as an usher, but perhaps as a layman or Sunday School teacher.  Similarly, if you don’t already have a career in law, you might want to become a magistrate or justice of the peace. You’re looking for anything that takes you out of your ordinary sphere of influence while still retaining structure.

Uranus Uranus imparts the need to get a glimpse of what lies beyond the veil (i.e. the tarot  High Priestess).  The mystery lies in how all the parts fit together – the here and the now and the above and beyond – there’s a connection for certain – and it’s the job of Uranus to find it. Unlike with Saturn, Uranus can never do this through organised religion. Structure and form are merely bonds for Uranus to break – it its urge to greater and more powerful revelations.

No example is given here because the energy of Uranus is considered too strong and dangerous to be channelled individually.  If you have Aquarius rising, look to Saturn as the traditional ruler.

Neptune

Neptune searches for unity through ‘meltdown’ and dissolution of the ego/self. Christianity is perfect for Neptunian seekers – especially the mystical side of the tradition.

No example is given here because the energy of Neptune is considered too strong and dangerous to be channelled individually.  If you have Pisces rising, look to Jupiter as the traditional ruler.

Pluto Pluto represents the face of spirituality bound up with evolutionary processes – this is the ultimate of the survival of the fittest.  Read the work of Teilhard de Chardon – who not only was a Jesuit priest, but also a first class philosopher and palaeontologist.

Again, no example is given because the energy of Pluto is too strong and dangerous to be channelled individually.  If you have Scorpio rising, look to Mars as the traditional ruler.

UnknownWith the Sun in Scorpio (obsession) and the Moon in Taurus (lust), today and tomorrow are days of “The Devil”.

Usually when you mention the Devil, you’re referring to temptation – temptation that will get you into serious trouble unless you’ve the strength to resist. This in turn generates apprehension and fear as well as – go ahead – admit it – just a touch of curiosity?

The Devil might have made him ‘do it’  – but ‘it’ could never happen to you – right?

It’s not that easy and you know it so why are you so hesitant to agree or disagree?

Because in Christian communities, the Devil is considered as the summum malum – the sum of all evil – and as the result, its energy is believed to be as dangerous as it is unfathomably complex.

I’m no more certain what that really means than you are.

But I do know that today and tomorrow we’re each dealing with ‘it’ – our personal unconscious – at the height of ‘its’ power (the full moon is exact at 15:17 GMT on 17 November at 25 Taurus 26) and that scares the hell out of us for reasons we’d each prefer to ignore.

We all know from Carl Jung that in our unconscious lies buried treasure of tremendous value just waiting for release – but as all myths and fairytales tell us treasures like this must be guarded by monsters and dragons – dangerous adversaries who will stop at nothing to prevent us from recovering the coveted prize.

In reality, these monsters and dragons are nothing more than our own fears – the actions, motives, wishes, intentions thoughts, and qualities that we find most embarrassing  – that which we dread we might someday be forced to face.

Yet on a day of “The Devil” that is precisely what you can expect. The most unloved sides of your personality can be expected to surface – lust for power, money, drink, what have you – causing such havoc in the outer world that you too might be tempted to retort  –  “the devil made me do it”.

And in some respects, you’d be right.

But the trick to dealing with the energy of today and tomorrow in the most constructive way is not to blame the devil or anyone else – but to be humbled and accept these limitations and embarrassments as none other than your own.

With the Sun in Taurus  (security and stability) and the Moon in Capricorn (achievement and wealth), today and tomorrow are Nine of Coins days.

The Nine of Coins is a glorious card – appealing on so many levels.

The woman here depicted, is completely at one with nature, her garden having produced an abundance of luscious purple grapes and shiny gold coins. On her hand, rests a falcon–the wild, progressive energy of the hunt – in control and at her command. At her feet, crawls a tiny snail – the slow, steady progress (snail’s pace) that realised her goals.  In the distance, is her sprawling manor house, secure and well maintained.

Perfection.

So could be wrong with this picture?

Well, the woman does have only her animals for company.

I’ll bet she gets lonely for human contact once and awhile – don’t you?

This is the downside of the Nine of Coins – money divides – and that’s the truth of it.
