Do you have a complex? 100% chance that you do.

Complex-of-Guilt.jpgWhat is a complex?

  1. Charcot – identifies a complex as ‘an idea’ or ‘group of ideas’ that ‘settles in the mind in the fashion of parasites’.
  2. Janet – suggests that a complex is an ‘idée fixe subconsciente’ that, having split off from the personality as a whole, wields enormous (unconscious) power.
  3. Freud- attributes to complexes a combination of mythological and emotional significance – for example, Oedipal complexes, the incestuous childhood triangle leading predictably to desire, fear, guilt, aggression, and shame.
  4. Adler – focuses on inferiority complexes, which he believed led to compulsive (and dangerous) power drives.
  5. Jung – connects complexes with archetypes, or universal psychic patterns, that absorb personal experiences like a sponge.

images.jpegAstrologers can zoom in on your complexes, like a bee to honey, so to speak. This does not take years of therapy. Whilst there are many potential complexes at work in your natal chart, the ones most like to give problems are those energised in some way. The usual suspects include angular planets, singletons, squares, and oppositions. Sextiles and trines can be problematic too but won’t pack as much punch. This is because you can relate, at least in part, with both sides of the equation. Conjunctions are a sticky wicket. They can play out for years without you even realising that they’re there, so much do they make you feel like ‘this’ is exactly who and what you are.

From time to time – when the moment is ripe by transit or progression – the complex will explode:

  • Projection – often, we project one side of the (complex) equation onto another person and then wage a battle against him/her. For example, if you have Sun square Saturn, you might pick fights with authority figures like teachers and bosses and then wonder how/why you always get flattened. Equally, you might find people  pick fights with you for no apparent reason. Either could manifest but if you have a strong Saturn (in Capricorn or Libra) and/or lots of earth in your chart, you probably will experience the latter. By contrast, if your Saturn is in Aries, Sagittarius, or Leo (fire), you will probably experience the former.
  • Somatization – sometimes the complex manifests in your body as illness. This is neither better or worse than projection – just different. For example, if you have Sun square Saturn, you may suffer from depression, heart problems, or even skin disorders. That there are physical or physiological causes for your ailments doesn’t detract from the fact that there is still an underlying complex in play. Although I do not practice medical astrology, I can speak from personal experience that most illnesses/complaints can be traced back to our charts, transits, and progressions.

Although you can never get rid of your complexes, you can learn to express their energy more constructively. This helps to avoid them feeling like fate. Work with your astrologer to identify the complexes at work (any combination of two, three, or more planets will constellate a complex of some kind with some being more potent than others). Then find a good therapist to help you to integrate them.

469image-500x500.pngCommon ‘father complexes’:

Sun/Saturn Father = Authority figure Did you feel rejected/unloved by your father because you are never good enough?
Sun/Neptune Father = Victim/Absent Did you feel your father was never there for you?
Sun/Jupiter Father = Source of good fortune Did you feel that father was always a good ‘hit’ for a loan or increase in your allowance?
Sun/Uranus Father = Illuminating force Did you feel that your father was so impersonal, so powerful that you were afraid of him?
Sun/Pluto Father = Source of (divine) retribution Did you feel that your father always won at your  expense?
Sun/Mercury Father = Educator Did you feel that your father always had something useful to share?
Sun/Moon Father = Nurturer Did you feel that your father was more like a mother than a father to you?
Sun/Venus Father = Beloved Did you feel that your father was placed high up on a pedestal, always out of reach for you?
Sun/Mars Father = Militant Did you feel that your father was always picking a fight with or on account of you?

Solar Returns – a clever way to snapshot your upcoming year – thanks Bernadette & Darrelyn!

According to Bernadette Brady and Darrelyn Gunzburg (AstroLogos), when looking at Solar Return (SR) charts, look only to the tightest (Ptolemaic) aspects (2-3 degrees at most) made by your SR planets to the four SR angles as well as any SR planets falling in the exact degree of the SR nodal axis.kk

Not only that, but look at the tightest (hard) aspects made by mid/points and the planets they aspect –  TIGHT =< 5 minutes of arc.  Note – Solar Fire and IO Edition both do Mid-Point Trees reports but if using IO Edition, you’ll also need to use Midpoint & Orb report to get the degree of the midpoint.

Set your SR chart for the location where you are currently living. Avoid the temptation to use ‘holiday locations’ – this won’t give as reliable a result.

One last thing to remember – the SR return chart is a snapshot of a 12 month period – this energy is not going to last forever. That doesn’t mean that things that may seriously impact the rest of your life won’t happen during the period. It does mean that you can’t dot every ‘i’ and cross every ‘t’. Predictive work like this is meant to provide a sketch not a fully finished picture. Besides, if you pay close attention to the direction in which things look headed, you might be able to significantly alter/control how it all turns out.

DDM SR 2017 18How might this work out for me for my upcoming SR chart 2017-18 (Bernadette and Darrelyn already did an amazing job at call the shots for my SR return 2016-17 which will be ending in the next couple of months).

In Summary –  it will be a confusing yet potentially very creative and inspiring year during which I’ll be overhauling not only who I am but how I relate to others – both those with whom I have a closer relationship (personal and business) and the whole of mankind. If that sounds like a tall order, it is and I need to make certain I don’t get lost in the excitement of it – there’s real possibility as well as some not so realistic stuff too. Perfect for my starting my new career as a life coach and embarking on my formal coaching program at the University of Cambridge.

  1. There are no planets on (conjunct) the angles (Ascendant/Descendant and MC/IC).
  2. There are no planets in the exact degree of the nodal axis (23) – although Saturn is close at 22, no cigar.
  3. Neptune (12 Pisces) makes a square to the MC (13 Sag) – suggesting confusion about status and career. Because Neptune is in the 1st house in this SR chart, the confusion is coming not from outside, but within me. The 1st house suggests that whilst I’m proactive with my status/career, it’s all a bit of a fog. It also suggests a personal commitment to becoming a synergistic part of the ‘larger whole’ – this is potentially a very creative place to be and it makes sense. I’m starting my new career as a life coach (having just retired from 30 years as a lawyer) and attending my first year in the Coaching program at the University of Cambridge. I don’t yet have a good grasp on my talents and abilities in this new career. I also don’t have a good idea what will be required of me. The good news is that Saturn (22 Sag) is also making a sextile to my Ascendant (19 Aquarius) and so at least I’ve got a good container or foundation in place to help with this career transition and I’m willing to make the commitment (Saturn is the SR chart ruler and in the 10th house of career) to hard work.DM SR MIDPOINT tree 2
  4. The (tightest) midpoints that I need to consider (don’t use those involving something itself involving an angle like, for example, the Part of Fortune) are:
    • midpoint tableSun/Venus (22 Virgo 03) to my Saturn (22 Sag 04) – suggesting seriousness and loyalty in relationships. This might be a heavy (yet profitable) year for my marriage and also my business (client) relationships. I need to make certain that I don’t feel too self-conscious when things might go wrong – it won’t help if I end up focusing on others at the expense of my own self-esteem.
    • Uranus/Neptune (4 Aries 49) to my Sun (4 Libra 45) – suggesting that I will develop a unique and original understanding of, and sympathy with, what it means to be human. This in turn requires refinement of my own special talents in a way encourages greater consciousness and brings hidden truths to light (good for coaching!)
    • Jupiter/Neptune (4 Capricorn 46) to my Sun (4 Libra 45) – suggesting a rich imagination and enthusiasm for all possibilities for the future (good for starting a new career and also in developing a new and inspired approach to coaching) – just don’t get carried away and spend too much time and energy on that which is unrealistic and/or unattainable. Good advice! Now just make sure that I follow it.

The Curious Case of Ms C (continued) & Her Fiery Mars

VenusLeoThings are heating up between Ms C and the certain Mr A (the subject of the prior post) and from what I’ve heard, she probably thinks that she’s winning in regards to her ‘man-eater’ role.

Let’s see what several predictive astrological techniques (birth time unknown, noon chart used) have to say:

Summary – If Ms C is to achieve her objectives during 2016-17, she needs to keep a cool head –learn to negotiate nicely, compromise, suggest win-win strategies. But this is going to be difficult, not the least because at the moment, she’s more prone that usual to be ‘hot-heated’ in order to express her ego desires. Ms C is being called upon to act responsibly during this period and if she’s unable to do so, she’s likely to find herself displaced and lonely; changes in job, home, and/or emotional relationships are indicated.

Firdaria

Firdaria is a classical technique rather like the Dash periods in Hindu astrology. It assigns periods of our lives to various planets in keeping with the Chaldean order of the planets.

Ms CMs C is currently in her Saturn/Mars Firdaria and in her natal chart, her Saturn (28 Gemini 12) is in reasonably good shape – in its own terms, and not damaged. According to the Liber Hermetis, ‘this person is conscious of hidden matters or secrets’ and ‘will work toward their own success, be self-motivated, and be happy.’

So far, so good.

All this success and self-motivation is funneled through her Mars at 16 Aries which, in its sign of ruler ship, is amazingly strong. According to the Liber Hermetis, she not only will she be ‘skilled’ and ‘daring’, but she will ‘complete quickly’ what she undertakes. But because her Mars is in the terms of Mercury, she will be ‘hot-headed’ and her ‘reason is clouded’.

  • SATURN : 2013
    • Saturn/Jupiter – February 10, 2015
    • Saturn/Mars – September 6, 2016
    • Saturn/Sun – April 3, 2018
    • Saturn/Venus – October 29, 2019
    • Saturn/Mercury – May 25, 2021
    • Saturn/Moon – December 20, 2022

Solar Return (2016-17)

Sun

The SR (Solar Return) Sun is the most important planet in the SR chart and shows where Ms C will expend most of her energy during the upcoming year. With SR Sun in a tight square aspect to Mars, Ms C will not only need to balance self-centered ego drives with the needs of others, but also deal with much conflict and anger. If she’s able to do this, she might achieve the objectives as suggested by her Saturn/Mars Firdaria. If she’s not, however, she might find herself squashed between a rock and a hard place.ms C solar return

Her SR Sun is also in tight square aspect to SR Uranus, the planet of ‘all change’. This suggests that while she desires significant change in her life, most likely she won’t get it – or at least not in the way that she wants it. With such an aspect, issues involving freedom vs. restriction are common.

Moon

The SR Moon indicates the emotional focus of Ms C for the upcoming year, and with SR Moon conjunct SR Saturn, suggests significant emotional strain most likely in regards to those restrictions. Ms C is being called upon to act responsibly during this time but this may not always be easy not the least because she may be feeling very lonely, unable to rely on the help of others.

Her SR Moon is also square SR Uranus and this suggests (domestic) disruption. At the very least she can expect a significant break in her daily routine and habits and at worst, a period of separation, if not a complete break, from those with whom she shares strong emotional bonds.

With her SR Moon also square the current Jupiter/Neptune opposition, she might expect to face blockage in the realization of her fondest hopes and dreams – and indeed it is quite possible this will so greatly her emotional balance, that she will need to reassess her approach.

Venus

Because Ms C’s SR Venus is conjunct SR Mercury, she has an excellent opportunity to develop and/or perfect excellent negotiation skills – to develop a soft and winning style not only to express her needs but also getting what she wants. If she can learn the fine art of compromise, she can create win/win situations and this would go far to achieving her goals (SR Venus trine SR Saturn).

Making Money through your Part of Fortune – Part I – Case study for Ms X

Egyptian Zodiac Taurus

Continuing my serious study of classical (Medieval) astrology, I now delve into one of the most famous Arabic Parts, the Part of Fortune.

The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that we can’t negotiate directly with the gods (i.e. the planets). Hence we must approach the gods through their Arabic parts (as shown in our natal charts). It’s rather like praying to a statue with the belief this somehow channels you to the spiritual reality of that which such statue represents.

In the mind-set of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the Sun represents Spirit while the Moon represents matter or physical form.

Algebraically put your Sun and Moon together (bring spirit to matter) along with your ascendant (or ASC = degree on the horizon where the sun rose the day you were born) and this becomes a very personalised pointer to how and where you make money.

______________

With his culture’s eye for trading and capitalism, the Roman Firmicus Maternus gives us a reliable method for looking at your chart in this way:

Therefore observe who is the ruler of the sign and of the degree of the Part of Fortune, that is, in whose terms the Part is; also in what house each ruler is, whether on first or second angles, in favourable or dejected houses, in their exaltation or fall; whether each ruler is in aspect to the Part of Fortune and if they, on the angles, are in aspect to each other.

When you have carefully investigated all this, then observe who is the ruler of the degree of the Moon (in a nocturnal chart) or of the Sun (in a diurnal chart) and see if this ruler is in aspect to the Part of Fortune. If one planet is found to be the ruler of all these degrees and is favourable located in signs in which he rejoices, or in his exaltation, or in his own house, this indicates a lucky chart. ….

But if there is not one ruler of the sign of the Part of Fortune and of its terms and of the terms of the Sun or the Moon, the one which has the greatest power should be the most important in the forecast.

If none of these stars (planets) is favourable located, the native will be oppressed by ill fortune to the end of his life.

The following is the analysis for Ms X who although she has married into significant wealth, wishes to know her potential to generate wealth in her own name.

___________

Reminder of the formula set out by that capitalist Roman, Firmicus Maternus:

In practice, this works as follows for Ms X (a diurnal chart):

  • Her Part of Fortune is 7 Sagittarius 07 = ASC – Sun by day + Moon. It is in the 7th house (highlighting wealth coming through partnership, in this case by marriage).
  • Jupiter rules Sag (Sagittarius)– so Jupiter rules the sign of her Part of Fortune.
  • The term ruler of 7 Sag 07 is also Jupiter.
  • In the chart of Ms X, Jupiter is at 22 Taurus 50 – spot on conjunct with the ASC (angular in a very big and very good way).
  • Jupiter in Taurus is neither in rulership nor exaltation– but it is very happy & exceedingly powerful in this chart. Not only is in conjunct the ASC (life force) but also in trine to the midheaven or MC.
  • Does Ms X have capacity to generate riches?
  • Absolutely !! (She has already done very well through marriage).
  • According to Bonatti’s Liber Hermetis, Jupiter in Taurus (in sect) ‘brings great riches and happiness linked with glory. The person will be the ruler of villas, estates, buildings.’ (NB – Ms X does have homes in several countries). Not only that but she ‘will receive benefits from women and may have a high social profile because of women.’
  • Is there potential for it to all go wrong?
  • Sadly, yes.
  • The Jupiter of Ms X is in the terms of Saturn. Take heed here – for Bonatti warns that because of this, ‘whatever is gained can be lost.’
  • To determine how much a problem this might pose, we look to the Sun and Moon and their rulers by term. Both the Sun and Moon are cadent (12th and 6th house respectively) which suggests potential to ‘fall from grace’ (at least in regards to wealth). The term rulers of the Sun and Moon (Mars and Mercury respectively) suggest pretty much the same thing (Mars being a malefic and in opposition with Saturn, the other malefic, and Mercury – while not particularly damaged, is out of sect and cadent). Further, we look to the triplicity rulers of her 2nd house (Gemini = Air) – and are pleased to find that in the 3rd and final period of her life, Jupiter (in excellent condition) gives her the ability to generate and hold enough wealth to comfortably get by.
  • Because this is a diurnal chart (she was born after sunrise), we must also look to the Sun and its rulers to determine ability to achieve and hold wealth.
  • The Sun of Ms X is at 27 Pisces 31. Jupiter the ruler by sign of Pisces and we know from our above analysis where that stands.
  • The term ruler of 27 Pisces 31 is Mars which in the chart of Ms X, is at 19 Virgo 15 in the 5th house (succedent). This is not a particularly bad place for Mars nor is it particularly good either. However having said that, Mars does pick up quite a bit of power being is ‘at the bends’ (i.e. in square aspect to the lunar nodes). Unfortunately Mars does not aspect the angles (MC or ASC) nor does it aspect the Part of Fortune.
  • Hence Mars and Jupiter are the indicators of the ability of Ms X to generate (and keep) wealth.
  • Mars is not in the best of conditions – even though it is very powerful (suggesting it powerfully influences in not particularly helpful ways). According to Bonatti, Mars in Virgo (in sect) indicates ‘dealers in arms and evil men of evil manner who pursue evil purposes’. Oh dear. Best not to take that too literally. Also according to Bonatti, with Mars in the terms of Venus ‘this person will see the death of their partner yet twill have many lovers and beautiful daughters.’ Best not to take this too literally either. Bonatti was writing in the 17th century and things were quite different then.
  • Regarding the best career choice for Ms X – we first look to Mercury (because the Moon is applying to Mercury).
  • The Mercury of Ms X is at 15 Aries 24 in the 12th house (cadent). Cadency suggests little or no power in the ‘establishment’ sense – leaving the focus more on a profession where service is key. Cadency also suggests that Ms X is not so much interested in acquiring personal power or gain through her profession. That’s good because the cadency of her Mercury suggests she is not particularly effective at doing so.
  • However Mercury is in its own terms – which suggests that it is amongst friends. According to Bonatti, Mercury in its own terms suggests ‘the person will have rank and share in secret knowledge’. Traditionally Mercury is associated with merchants (buying & selling). In more modern astrology, Mercury is associated with communication of all sorts including writing (the idea of ‘secrets’ is also highlighted by modern astrology through association with the 12th house). Mercury is not connected with the angles (ASC or MC) and only very widely trines the Part of Fortune. This suggests Ms X may not make much money in professions associated with Mercury.
  • Because Mars is ‘at the bends’, it is also a strong significator of profession. Traditionally Mars is linked to the warrior classes. Today it might equate to anything connected arguments/disputes and/or sharp (knife/blade) things – such as being a butcher or surgeon or a judge who resolves disputes in a court of law. The Mars of Ms X is likewise not connected with the angles and again only widely squares the Part of Fortune suggesting she is unlikely to make significant money from these professions.
  • However – good news when we look to her status in regards to profession – Venus (1st triplicity ruler of the 10th house) – and because Venus is exalted in Pisces (and not cadent) and its own triplicity ruler is Jupiter (strong and connected with the angles) Ms X could achieve some fame (if not fortune) in her chosen profession.
  • This is further confirmed by her immensely powerful solar doryphory – or train of attendants – including Venus, Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury and the Moon. In the chart of Ms X, the Sun has lots of help and support. This is good.
  • In summary Ms X has tremendous potential to accumulate significant wealth (most likely through partnership/marriage) however she equally has the potential to lose it again. This is a real danger. However there is the suggestion that in later life she has the ability to accumulate and hold enough wealth in order to get comfortably by. In regards to profession, careers relating to merchandising, communication, dispute resolution are highlighted and although Ms X is likely to acquire some status and recognition in regards to her career, it is unlikely she will acquire significant wealth from it.ph88

Today and Tomorrow are Nine of Coins Days

With the Sun in Taurus  (security and stability) and the Moon in Capricorn (achievement and wealth), today and tomorrow are Nine of Coins days.

The Nine of Coins is a glorious card – appealing on so many levels.

The woman here depicted, is completely at one with nature, her garden having produced an abundance of luscious purple grapes and shiny gold coins. On her hand, rests a falcon–the wild, progressive energy of the hunt – in control and at her command. At her feet, crawls a tiny snail – the slow, steady progress (snail’s pace) that realised her goals.  In the distance, is her sprawling manor house, secure and well maintained.

Perfection.

So could be wrong with this picture?

Well, the woman does have only her animals for company.

I’ll bet she gets lonely for human contact once and awhile – don’t you?

This is the downside of the Nine of Coins – money divides – and that’s the truth of it.

Uranus in Aries – (or why I’m so angry…)

Dear friends,

It’s time to explain why there’s so much anger in my recent posts.

Uranus is in Aries = anger is in the air.

But more specifically, transiting Uranus in Aries  (in my–very public– 10th house) is now making a direct opposition to my Libra sun (in my–very private–4th house).

  • Keywords for Libra are ingratiating and amiable.
  • Keywords for Aries are assertive and angry.
  • Now is the time for my anger to go live.

According to Howard Sasportas, in his excellent book, The Gods of Change, my Uranus – Sun transit suggests a time when I am in accord with my inner need to develop and expand in ways I’ve not done before.  Astrologically, I’m in the mood to open up and experiment with life.

Because Uranus is in opposition to my Sun,this comes at the price of upheaval and pain. I can  also expect to feel restless and bored–trapped by circumstances beyond my control. My inner Self is demanding change and if I deny it, my world may collapse on my head (or worse I will get ill). But if can go with the flow, then I can make way for a brand new me.

My Uranus–Sun transit is also about finding “the father inside me”– i.e. the ability to take charge and direct my life, rather than adjusting (as I always have done)  to others’ needs. The anger generated by Uranus in Aries allows me to do this.  For the first time, I’m standing up for myself big time.   If this seems abrasive, antisocial, and discourteous, then so be it – to apologise would be too Libra – and that’s not what I’m meant to be about right now.

So until December this year, when my Uranus-Sun transit comes to a close,  please support me as best you can.

If I can accept this new influx of energy, and make the necessary changes in my life, then I will have taken a major step forward in the process that Carl Jung has coined, individuation.  In other words, I will have done nothing less than to have discovered the Divine in me.

For more information on the process of individuation see http://www.thesap.org.uk/Individuation.

Astro-dynamics of My Knight in Shining Armour

In yet another characterisation exercise for my new memoir, I’m digging into the astro-personality of my husband, JWM.  He plays the knight in shining armour who rescues me from the Wicked Witch of A ‘dam.

Although he won’t admit it, JWM’s father is a huge influence in his life.  This makes the nature of the bond between them even more important because it operates unconsciously.

The key astrological configurations in  father/son relationships are (1) Saturn (discipline and control), (2) the Sun (validation of Self) and (3) Mars (survival instinct).  The concepts here are clash, struggle, opposition, fear, defeat, and betrayal.

In myth, Saturn and Mars are mortal enemies.  Yet they absolutely need each other.  It’s interesting that Saturn functions not only as the father figure in a young man’s life but also as the unavoidable aging process that eventually brings the young buck to his knees.

But back to the Wicked Witch of A ‘dam.  JWM was a young man then.   He had not yet undergone his Saturn return during which he would gain his sense of perspective.

JWM’s Saturn (structure/perfection) in Aries (sense of omnipotence) sits on his father’s Sun/Uranus  (break w/ tradition) in Aries; JWM never stops judging his father.  His father doesn’t know how to react.  Their interactions take on a decidedly defensive tone.   The young ram must butt against something if he’s to make any progress at all.

A young man’s sense of direction must come from his notion  of the ‘father figure’.  Because his Sun is in Aquarius, JWM needs his father to be a visionary who accomplishes nothing less than transforming the free world.  Whether his father achieved this isn’t the point.  The point is that with JWM’s Sun square Mars/Neptune conjunction (dissociation from action), he needs to see his father that way.

So not surprisingly, when I first met JWM in A ‘dam he was an unfocused drifter.    His father had failed to unleash JWM’s Mars energy  (there’s no synastry there).   But I did.*

According to Liz Greene, the energy of Neptune/Mars often manifests through romantic heroism.   That’s just what it did.  Enter my knight in shining armour whose Neptune/Mars in Scorpio formed a perfect trine with the Mars (Cancer) of Alieke, the Wicked Witch of A ‘dam.

_________

* My Uranus (liberation) in Cancer (nurturing) trines JWM’s Neptune/Mars in Scorpio (passion).
